System Requirements for PBS Endo

The PBS Endo Support staff encourage you to ask any questions.

ItemSpecificsNotes

Computer

Recommended:  Pentium 4Ghz, 120GB, 512MB Ram, 17” Monitor .

Minimum:  Pentium III 800, 10GB, 256MB Ram, 15” Monitor .

Minimum Resolution: 1024 x 768

Standard configuration includes:   Keyboard, Mouse, mouse pad, CD-RW, sound card, Ethernet 100 Network Card. The difference between a desktop and a notebook is mostly size and price.

Operating

System

Windows, Windows XP Pro, Vista, Windows 7/2003/2008 Server

Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP Home, ME, and  NT are not  supported.

Network

Microsoft, TCP/IP

A network of less than 5 computers can be connected using Windows XP Professional in a peer-to-peer configuration.  Networks with 5+  systems should have a dedicated file Server. Use Industry standard Ethernet network cards that support the TCP/IP protocol.Use Wireless networks at your own risk.  The interference in an office from x-ray machines can cause a wireless network to be unreliable. Wireless networks must be installed by a professional with security and a reliable signal that does not drop or cache.

Hard drive

Recommended:  120 GB or higher Minimum:  40 GB

The hard drive size can be estimated based on the size of the practice and the amount of data that is stored. For example, if digital 5x-rays or a scan of a health history is captured, the more disk space will be required.  For a simple calculation, multiply the number of new patients seen times the number of x-rays taken times the size per x-ray. Use only hardware RAID 1 or 5.  Do not use a software RAID or dynamic drives. External, offsite media is still required for a backup even if a RAID is used. Do not use disk compression utilities.

Printers

Laser, Inkjet, and Label

Laser printer: For office related duties such as reports, claims, receipts, and envelopes       Recommend:  HP LaserJet series

Label printer: For individual chart and mailing labels.

Dymo Label Printer 330 or 400 Inkjet printer: For the final letter with an image

Internet

The Internet is required for Electronic Claim Filing and Electronic Statements

Access to the internet requires a minimum DSL connection. See the following section on Virus Scanners.

Virus Scanner

Virus Scanner that can exclude a folder.

A Virus Scanner is required if the computers access the Internet.  The Virus Scanner must be able to exclude folders from the scan.  PBS Endo requires the virus scanner to exclude the PBSW folder while PBS Endo is in use.  In addition, virus updates and scans throughout the day are not supported since there is a negative cached impact to the network.

Additional Software

Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat

Microsoft Word is required to archive and e-mail letters. PBS Endo requires Adobe Acrobat Standard v8 or higher to archive or create PDF documents.  For any computer that does not create PDF documents, Adobe Reader can be installed.

Backup

External Drives, or Tape, or CD-RW with matching software

The capacity of the drive determines the media of choice.  A tape or very large external drive is required when images ( x-rays and scanned documents ) are retained. A RAID drive is not a backup solution.

Scanners

Scanner with Multi-page feeder, and Twain-32 Compliant driver

The Scanner and Clipboard functionality requires the Imaging for Windows software installed on each computer. The Imaging for Windows software can be purchased from Global360.com; use v2.8 not v4.0. Some scanners use a separate transparency adapter to capture an x-ray.  PBS Endo does not support two scanners on a computer or a scanner installed on a network router.

Tablet PC

Tablet PC using Microsoft Tablet PC or Vista 32 operating system, connected to the network, with at least 1024x768 monitor resolution, and a keyboard (not a virtual keyboard). PBS Endo EndoChart Required.

The optional PBS Endo Patient Registry software allows a patient to use a Tablet PC to fill out their demographic information and medical history form.  The patient’s signature is also captured and digitized.   See Network specifications above for Wireless integration.

How do you access PBS Endo from Home?

We encourage you to have a copy of PBS Endo on your home system. At the end of each day, you will backup your office data to an external drive or CD and take the backup home. Then restore the data onto your home computer. By simply restoring the data, you can look up patient information and run reports.  Alternatively, you can access PBS Endo from your home through the internet to the office. This approach would require you to leave the office computer on at night. This approach does not test the backup and is slower.

Example - 5 User Configuration when Radiography is Included

Server – Pentium 4GHz, 1GB RAM, 120+GB Hard Drive, Windows 2003/2008 Server, CD-RW, 5 External Hard Drives for backup
Workstations - Pentium 4GHz, 256MB RAM, 64MB Video, Windows XP Pro, can be Notebooks if used in the operatory.
Switch, Cat 5 Cable

Write Cache and Virus Scanners

PBS Endo cannot have the server or any workstations cache the writes to the server’s hard drive. The data must be written immediately to the server’s hard drive. A Virus Scanner is required if the computers access the Internet. The Virus Scanner must be able to exclude folders from the scan. PBS Endo requires the virus scanner to exclude the PBSW folder while PBS Endo is in use.
